Minnesota Life is one of the "Great Places to Work in the Twin Cities"

St. Paul employer's benefits package and friendly environment earn kudos from employees

St. Paul, MN, August 26, 2002 — For the second straight year, Minnesota Life Insurance Company won a spot on The Business Journal's list of "Great Places to Work in the Twin Cities." It is one of only 19 employers to appear on this year's list.

"Our most valuable asset is our people," said Robert L. Senkler, chairman and chief executive, Minnesota Life. "Our goal is to be an employer of choice in the Twin Cities and winning a spot on this list for two years straight indicates we are achieving that goal." Senkler noted the company's annual turnover rate is less than six percent.

To be considered for a spot on the list, companies must submit complete nomination forms that include information about the company, the environment and employee benefits. This year, 80 of the 94 companies that submitted forms were eligible for final consideration. Also, randomly selected employees of the nominated companies were surveyed on subjects such as working conditions, corporate culture, and opportunities for advancement.

"Minnesota Life employees commented on the commitment to life balance, a fantastic group of people, rapport between management and employees, commitment to customers, stability of the company's strong values, an environment that's professional yet friendly, and opportunities for advancement," said Diane Cormany, FOCUS editor, The Business Journal.

Minnesota Life also has appeared on Computerworld's list of the "100 Best Places to Work in IT" each of the last ten years. Nationwide, the total employment of all the company's business units and subsidiaries is approximately 3,000; 2,400 Minnesota Life employees work in the corporate headquarters in downtown St. Paul.

The Business Journal launched the "Great Places to Work" project four years ago. Fifty-seven companies have appeared on the list; some (including Minnesota Life) appeared multiple times.

Founded in 1880, Minnesota Life Insurance Company provides financial security for individuals and businesses in the form of insurance, pensions and investments. The company is one of a select number of insurance groups in the United States carrying "very high" ratings including: A++ from A.M. Best, AA+ from Standard & Poor's, Aa2 from Moody's Investors Services and AA from Fitch. With $300 billion of life insurance in force and $20 billion in assets under management, the company serves nearly seven million people through a combined work force of 4,400 representatives and employees at its St. Paul headquarters and agencies and offices nationwide.
